SAML
The Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) allows a Service Provider (SP - your application) to trust an Identity Provider (IdP - CERN SSO), by the mutual exchange of Metadata including digital certificates. Authentication Assertions are issued by the IdP to the SP as packets of XML containing information about the user. Shibboleth and Mellon are two commonly used pieces of software to enable SAML Authentication.
